Choosing the Right Braai Stand: Mini, Compact, Family or Wheel Rim?

A braai stand is one of those purchases people either get exactly right or regret within a month — too small and you're constantly frustrated, too big and it's a pain to store or move. Here's how to think about size and style before you order.

Mini Braai Stand — 1–2 people

Built for a small grid and a compact footprint, this is the right call if you're braaiing solo or as a couple most of the time, or if storage space is tight (a small balcony, a townhouse patio). It's also a good starter option if you're not sure how often you'll actually use a dedicated stand.

Compact Braai Stand — 2–4 people

The middle ground — enough grid space for a small family or a couple of guests, while still being easy to move around the yard. This is our most commonly ordered size, because it comfortably covers most weekday and casual weekend braais without being oversized for everyday use.

Family Braai Stand — 4–6+ people

If weekend gatherings regularly include extended family or friends, this is the size that stops you from cooking in two batches. The larger grid handles more meat at once and suits households that braai often rather than occasionally.

Wheel Rim Braai Stand — the South African classic

Made from genuine steel car wheel rims welded into a stand, this is the design most South Africans picture when they think "braai stand." It's rugged, distinctive, and each one has slightly different character depending on the rims used — no two are quite identical. It's a strong choice if you want something with real local heritage, or if you're selling at flea markets where this design gets recognised and picked up fastest.

Custom / Heavy-Duty Braai Stand

For shisanyama-style setups, events, or reselling, the heavy-duty option adds reinforced construction and a bottom storage shelf for wood or charcoal. This is built to order based on exactly what you need — larger commercial-style grids, specific dimensions, or bulk orders for resale.

A few practical things to consider

• Where will it live? If it needs to move often (flea markets, camping, moving between a patio and garden), prioritise something you can lift and carry comfortably.
• How often will you use it? Frequent use justifies a larger, more durable build; occasional use is better served by something smaller and easier to store.
• Steel gauge matters more than looks. A thin, light braai stand warps and rusts through faster than a solid welded build — this is the main difference between an imported flat-pack stand and one properly fabricated locally.
