Interior painting: what affects the result most

• Surface preparation — filling cracks, sanding, and priming matter more to the final look than the paint brand.
• Number of coats — most walls need two coats for even coverage; skipping this shows patchiness over time.
• Paint finish — matte hides wall imperfections better, while sheen finishes are easier to wipe clean in high-traffic areas like kitchens.

Exterior painting considerations

Exterior paint in the Johannesburg climate needs to handle strong summer UV exposure and seasonal rain. Cheaper exterior paints often fade or peel within a couple of years; a quality weather-resistant paint, properly applied, lasts significantly longer and is cheaper over time than repainting every two years.

Tiling: where mistakes get expensive

• Substrate preparation — an uneven floor or wall causes tiles to sit unevenly no matter how carefully they're laid.
• Waterproofing before tiling — essential in bathrooms and any wet area, and impossible to fix after tiles are down without ripping them up again.
